The Wolf Moon

Greetings—

The Wolf Moon made an appearance this past weekend. Due an abundance of clouds, overcast skies and intermittent snow showers, I was afraid that I’d miss this late January wonder. Finally at about 8:30PM on Sunday night I noticed the clouds beginning to part and decided to jump at the chance. With much help from my wife we gathered up the gear, pulled screens from windows and set up. Half an hour later the skies had cleared and there she was … in all her glory.

Bought some flowers for my lovely the other day. I was captivated by the folds in the petals I saw on this rose. This was captured with natural, overcast light coming in from a window about 4 feet away.

Mystic Distance

Greetings—

I found myself just driving around town on toward sunset (camera in tow, of course) and noticed that the Lake Michigan/Kenosha “icebergs” had grown to photo-worthy size. I opened the window and leaned against the sill to capture this three-image, bracketed HDR; leaning, I do believe, still qualifies as “hand-held,” don’t you think? That’s my story, at least, and I’m sticking to it!

Warm weather over the last two weeks has meant that instead of growing in size, our “icebergs” are shrinking instead … sad, as I was hoping to get some more shots of them this year.

On a much more important subject matter I want to tell you about a project that I am very proud to have been asked to participate in, Images Without Borders:

Images without Borders provides limited edition photographic prints from fine art photographers; all proceeds go directly to Doctors without Borders in support their relief efforts in Haiti and around the world. There is no overhead other than the price of printing. Your purchase of any of these stunning images provides immediate funding. Our donors receive no remuneration and all images are freely donated in aid of those who suffer today and need our help. Help artists help the world.

The image above is one of my submissions and there are hundreds more stunning photos to choose from. Please follow the link above, have a look around and consider making a purchase towards this very worthy cause … thank you.

Greetings—

I do not pray for peace
I’ve given up on that
The agony of having too much power
Sees the tentative
Darkest, strangest mystery
That whether peace or war
We all find some peace in the end

The Intimacy of Fear

Greetings—

Driving through the cemetery at night—tripod straddling the front passenger seat—I was struck by the shadows cast from the street lights about a half a block away, shining over the tall brick wall separating them … from us. Our light casting their shadows …

Soft Simulacrum of Life

Greetings—

When recovering from shoulder surgery one has to think of creative ways to take photos so I asked my wife to help my get the tripod out to the car and we set it up over the passenger side front seat. I ticked in some basic settings and headed out. After driving around the neighborhood for a while and not really finding anything interesting I ended up at the cemetery which borders our property. After toodling around for a bit I found the plowed driveway intriguing so I stopped, rolled down the side window, selected a focus point, guessed at a focal length and exposure and ended up capturing the shot above. I did end up cropping just a tad on the left side to remove the small bit of side mirror that ended up in the shot.
