This scene is from just outside the cemetery that is adjacent to our house. It was the first significant snowfall of the ’07-’08 season. Mid December, as I recall. Little did I know at the time just how much snow we’d end up with when it was all said and done.
It is all said and done … isn’t it?
Hard to tell this year. Hell, we just got some more the other night, which pushed our total to over 100″ … didn’t last long, as it was little more then a heavy dusting really, and it melted the next day. Still.
What’s neat about this scene is that if you were to start walking into the frame from this point and continue in a straight line for about two blocks eventually you’d end up in our backyard. Okay, you’d have to climb a fence that separates the properties first…
I’m not sure if these geographic observances make for a good photo but hopefully they do make for a mildly entertaining anecdote.
I find the shot interesting, what with the broken gate on the left; the “Y” of the tire tracks; the somewhat ironic fact that the cemetery is bathed in light while the outside is dark; all the symbolism evoked by a religious icon “welcoming” you to a place of death with open arms … I just really like it.
Hopefully, you do, too.
CAMERA INFO
Hand held Canon 20D; Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens (stabilizer on) @ 35mm; Aperture Priority Mode; 1/4s @ f/5.0; ISO 400.
POST PRODUCTION
After adjusting the RAW file for tonal balance I save the file out to TIF. Then, I converted to black & white via the Gradient command, adjusted the shadows for a little more detail, aplied noise reduction and finally sharpened via the High Pass method.
