Julie B. Well with Eddie Hamilton

Greetings~

The Julie B. Well and Eddie Hamilton perform at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn.

Mr. Hamilton kicked off the show with a lovely set of very introspective, folksy material. I had not seen Eddie before to this point but I’m happy I have now. I enjoyed his set quite a bit; in fact there were a few times that I was distracted from my task of photography by his poignant lyrics … I just had to stop what I was doing to listen!

The Julie B. Well provided a most kick-ass set of Prog next. The band has … matured, so to speak, rounding out their sound very nicely with the additions of Sean Gill (from Strange Land) on guitar and Angela Schmidt (from Far Corner) on cello. This is certainly not a knock on the former players, as I’ve always enjoyed the J.B.W. sound, it’s just … tighter, fuller, bigger … more, if you know what I mean. And in this case, more is definitely better.

The J.B.W.’s songs have that rare combination of airy melodiousness and power that not many bands can pull off. While not shooting, I found myself transported to spectral aural realms and yet, at the same time, banging my head. Good stuff indeed.

Sadly, I was much too tired to stick around to hear all that much of Toad King, who were also on the bill and closed the evening, but the little I did hear was very tasty, indeed. I’m looking forward to catching them more in-depth in the near future.

More Sandcarvers-in-the-Studio photos coming soon, new ones from this past Tuesday night, so keep an eye out for that in the days ahead.

No blogging this weekend, as in a few short hours I’m off on assignment; first in Wausau, WI and then I quickly head to Waterloo, IA. See ya next week sometime.
