NEW GALLERY: Grand Disaster with The Barkeeps – McAuliffe’s Pub May 8 2009

Greetings~

It was quite an evening of Alt-Country-Punk-Whatever as Grand Disaster and The Barkeeps invaded McAuliffe’s Pub.

Getting the evening off to a rockin’ start were The Barkeeps:

A few friends playing heartfelt and genuine songs about life. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Songs about being the outcasts of modern day society and not conforming to the status quo. About working your life away for the gain of others only to scrape through existence. About friendships that cant be broken and friendships that have ended in betrayal. Songs about drinking to be merry and escaping the workday, drinking because you feel its all you have left. About losing control of everything you built your life around. This is for you and ones like you. The broken man holding on to false hope. Every disgruntled worker questioning his past and future. the unemployed wondering how they will provide for their family. Every single mother feeling abandoned and alone. For the united bastards drinking and singing the night away in the smokey barrooms, This is for the damned begging for another chance. This is for the down and out, to comfort their heavy hearts.

I believe this was the bands first public appearance and if so, this was quite a debut indeed. I’m looking forward to catching these guys again soon.

Next up … Grand Disaster:

The first week was marked by a blizzard, the third and fourth brought major surgery. The ninth week was met with an engine fire, the eleventh held severe flooding. A mill explosion overshadowed week twelve, while week thirteen was ominously quiet. Cops came calling on the seventeenth week, and the twenty-first was revealed to hold infestation and recriminations.—– If we get a little dark, believe us, we have our reasons.

A little dark … yes, perhaps; but a good time, as well. Tight arrangements … great melodies … top notch musicianship … searing solos … this band has it all. “Good music about bad choices.” “We are the voices in your head.” I mean, come on; how can you go wrong with a band that lists Soupy Sales and Captain Kangaroo as influences … I ask you?

Many thanks to The Barkeeps,; Grand Disaster and, of course, JJ McAuliffe and the wonderful staff at McAuliffe’s Pub! Enjoy the slide show here or click the link below to view a gallery of full-sized photos.

Here’s another from the archives. This was taken last Spring as I was walking along the train tracks close to our home. For me, it’s nice to go back and revisit some of the shots that have been forgotten; lost in the shuffle as life gets busy and thoughts turn to other things.

New Gallery: “Supernaut at McAuliffe’s Pub February 20, 2009″

(If you can’t view slide show, click here.)

It was really a treat to finally see Supernaut at McAuliffe’s last Friday night. Rising from the ashes of what was once Five Nickel High, Supernaut is a fun and talented band that covers the heavier and edgier side of rock. The place was packed! I especially enjoyed the vocal stylizings of DAN LENEGAR, who’s range is quite impressive and, of course, the one and only DAVE UHRICH on guitar, who’s been a staple in the Chicago music scene for years. Rounding out the band is the very tight rhythm section of DAN BUCKLEY on bass and MICHAEL BRAGG on drums. All very nice chaps, as well, and they didn’t leave any one disappointed, let me tell you.

My thanks to the very gracious Supernaut and, of course, JJ and his fine staff for always making me feel all warm and cozy!

HELP SHAYMUS KICK CANCER

Just a reminder that tomorrow will be the Shaymus Guinn Benefit / Shay-Fest. All the funds raised will be going to help defray cancer treatment costs for 8 year old Shay, who has Ewing’s Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer.

The event kicks off at 3:00PM at Fountain Hall in Sturtevant, WI, with a DJ, raffle, auctions, food & bar, darts & pool and children’s activities, followed by Shay-Fest at McAuliffe’s Pub, with entertainment provided by The Untrained Layman, Feet of Clay, The Andes and the Celtic sounds of Og.

$15.00 will get you in to both events, and I believe there is separate pricing for one or the other. For details click on the banner above or the McAuliffe’s Pub web site. I will be providing free photos of the days events to all who attend. Food, drink, fun, music and photos … sounds like a good deal in exchange for a few shekels to a very worthy cause, don’cha think?

The Pine Box Boys with Grand Disaster

I realize that I might be going out on a limb here — what with all the great music JJ has provided over the years — but I have to say that this could very well have been the finest evening of music at McAuliffe’s Pub I have ever witnessed … damn, what a fun night!

Things got underway with Grand Disaster, a new band out of Milwaukee in their debut performance, who rocked the house with their blend of country-rock-punk-roots and humor. This was a searing set that didn’t let up from start to finish. Just when you thought you could catch your breath … they’d beat your head against the wall some more. Keep an eye on these boys … they’ll definitely be making some noise in the very near future.

Next, from San Francisco, touring in support of their new album, “Child of Calamity,” The Pine Box Boys.

O.M.F.G!

How to describe TPBB? Well, I’m still stunned and at a loss for words, actually. The sticker on their new album calls their music “Horrorbilly.” CD Baby says, “The Pine Box Boys serve up a delicious, devilish brew of dark grass, coarse swampobilly and rugged, aching rootsy country that wanders through haunted alleys, dive bars, deserted mining towns on the wrong side of the tracks in your own home town. [...] Hitting at the heart of the rural existence, the Pine Box Boys are a must for any even partial fan of artists like Drive By Truckers and Bad Livers.”

All I can say is that if rollicking roots/bluegrass with dark humored lyrics is your cup of tea, do check these guys out soon.

Two Loons For Tea

Well, I look at it this way: if you’re introducing a gallery of photos for the dreamy art-pop band from Seattle, Two Loons For Tea, you should use a dreamy photo to do it.

I first heard them about five years ago on ‘XRT, and I’ve been a fan ever since. Comparing music is always a dodgy proposition at best, but if one were reminded of a Portishead/Edie Brickell type of thing, you wouldn’t be accused of being far off the mark.

Now, after all these years I’ve finally had the pleasure of seeing TLFT live … right here in my own backyard at McAuliffe’s Pub and, as a double bonus, I had a chance to capture some shots, too.

TLFT consists of Sarah Scott on vocals and Jonathan Kochmer on guitar. Joining them for this leg of their tour were William Kopecky (Kopecky, Far Corner, Par Lindh Project, Snarling Adjective Convention) on Bass; Craig Walkner (Far Corner, Snarling Adjective Convention) on Drums and Tacket Brown on vibes.

They started the evening with a few songs from their new album “Nine Lucid Dreams” and I was hooked from the start. I was really diggin’ on it when suddenly — and sadly — Sarah had to leave the stage due to illness after four songs. I really give her credit for giving it a go, however, as I could tell that something just wasn’t right.

Disappointed, I hung out to see what would happen while the band conferred. After a few minutes, the owner of McAuliffe’s Pub took the stage and announced that Sarah could not continue, but he went on to say that everyone in attendance would receive either a refund or a free CD — their choice — and that the rest of the band were going to carry on anyway.

Very cool!

The rest of TLFT then proceeded to treat us to over an hour of some very ethereal pop-jazz-prog instrumental jams. The combination of percussion, bass, vibes and guitar worked very well, with Kopecky’s bass providing a strong anchor, both rhythmically and melodically. The boy can play and Tacket laid down some very tasty vibe solos as well, while both Kochmer and Walkner wove a rich musical tapestry underneath and around the musical landscape.

So all in all, what could’ve been a train wreck actually turned out to be a really cool evening. It was good to see and hear Sarah for at least a little while and I raise my pint to her for a speedy recovery.

My heartfelt thanks to Sarah, Jonathan, William, Craig and Tacket of TLFT and, of course, JJ, Jill and the rest of the splendid staff at McAuliffe’s Pub.
