Silent Present

Greetings~

Here’s one of the more interesting things you can find at the Racine Zoo. Sad, really, as more times then not displays are closed, animals (the few they have) are put away, etc. Oh, and mind you don’t step in the goose and peacock shit you’ll find all over the grounds from the birds roaming free. Yeah, not all that clean, either, to say the least. Can’t really say I recommend this trip all that much, but there ya go.

Technical Info:
Canon 20D; Canon EF 70-200m f/2.8 IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens; Av priority; 1/60; f/7.1; ISO 200; Nik Color Efx Pro “Tonal Contrast” applied in post.

Another Wallaby from the Racine Zoo … actually, the same one as pictured the other day, just later in the day, is all.

Lonely Song With Deeper Creation

I was quite surprised that the zoo had these Wallaby’s out in an enclosure that was open to the public. As a matter of fact, the one pictured above came right up to me and was smelling me as soon as I walked in. Not knowing their temperament I didn’t attempt to either pet him or get a close up shot. To be honest, they seemed very tame (or dumb as a box of rocks), but I still didn’t want to chance it.

I waited until he was off the path and back to doing Wallaby type things before I started snapping. As you can see, he still seemed very curious about me, even while munching on his leaves.
__________

We had our first snowfall here in Wisconsin last night. No accumulation or anything, at least here in Kenosha, but it was definitely white. I do hate the cold, but I absolutely love this time of year for photography. I’ll take late Autumn and Winter over summer shooting any day.

Ode to Crippled Spirit

So, today’s short rant is about my Love/Hate relationship with zoos.

Where else can one see the magnificent beasts that roam the earth? I suppose if one had the coin, you could travel the world to see them in their natural habitat. Very costly, not only in terms of expenditure, but also in terms of the environment. Very hit or miss, as well. You drop all that money and leave huge footprints all over the planet and there’s no guarantee you’ll see exactly what you went to see.

My guess is that far too many of these travelers with expendable income are going not to observe, but to kill. Now, I have nothing at all against hunting … for food and survival, but for sport … so you can extend your penis? No, you’re a sick person.

So, to afford us the opportunity to see creatures we’d normally not see, I suppose zoos serve a purpose. But here’s the thing: Next time you visit a zoo, take a moment to do more then go, “Ooo, look … a Lion!”

Really take at look at the creature in front of you, especially those of our close relatives, like the example above. Look into their eyes.

You’ll see a sadness that is almost heartbreaking. Caged in small enclosures, never to roam free as they were meant to. It’s sad … they’re sad.

Like I said … Love/Hate. Hence, today’s title.

Anyway, stay tuned … a new Sandcarvers gallery is coming a little later in the day.
