Greetings—
The “Wisconsin” was built of iron in 1881 by the Detroit Dry Dock Co. of Wyandotte, Michigan for the Goodrich Lines. Originally ran the Milwaukee-Grand Haven route, and in 1883 went to the Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee RR. Crosby Trans. Co. got her in 1896 and renamed her “Naomi”. She ran for many years with the “Nyack”, between Milwaukee, Grand Haven and Muskegon as night boats, as the Grand Trunk Line. The “Naomi” burned May 21, 1907 about 28 miles off Grand Haven, Michigan with a loss of five lives. She was towed to Manitowoc, Wisconsin for rebuilding and put back into service in 1909 as the “E. G. Crosby”. Sold by Crosby Trans. Co. to the U.S. Quartermaster Dept. in 1918, she was renamed “General Robert M. O’Reilly” and served as a hospital ship in New York harbor. In 1920, after the war, she was purchased by Wisconsin Transit Co., renamed “Pilgrim”, and returned to the Great Lakes. In 1925 she was sold again to the Goodrich Co. and took her original name “Wisconsin” once again. The “Wisconsin” foundered off the shore of Kenosha, Wisconsin in the big blow on Lake Michigan on Oct. 29, 1929. All but nine of the sixty people on board were saved. Capt. Douglas H. Morrison was among the lost.
Today, the Wisconsin lies six and half miles east-southeast of Kenosha in 130 feet of water. The superstructure is gone with I-beams and supports remaining. Inside the wreck much machinery, and cargo can still be seen along with three automobiles, a Hudson, Essex, and a Chevrolet touring car.
