NEW GALLERY: Indy Irish Fest: Sept. 18 & 19, 2009 Indianapolis IN

Greetings~

The 2009 Indy Irish Fest definitely lived up to the hype and then some, many times over! This was my first time attending and covering this wonderful fest for PaddyRock Radio … and now I can’t wait to go back next year! The list of entertainers was just outstanding this year and this time around I was able to capture Mother Grove, The Mickey Finns, two outstanding sets by The Sandcarvers and a wonderful after-party Irish Session in the lobby/bar of the Omni Severin Hotel, which carried on into the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Yes, the weather was gorgeous, the music was smoking and the Guinness was flowing, sure.

A huge Celtic Camera and PaddyRock thanks to all the performers and festival staff for making this a weekend to remember!

Oh, one more thing; welcome aboard to to Aaron Fasting, brand new drummer for The Sandcarvers. This was his debut performance with the band and his skill on the skins is something to behold, sure!

Iowa Irish Fest: Day 2 – Aug. 1, 2009 Waterloo IA

Greetings~

[Oh dear ... what time is it ... where am I? Things are a little foggy ... head's pounding just a bit! Wait ... Hotel room; a "few" pints last night ... what did I do yesterday? Ohhh ... yes, I'm at the The Iowa Irish Fest! And there's gonna be a ton a great acts today! C'mon, Gareth; snap dem old bones of yours into gear ... there's some fine craic to attend today! Coffee: check ... shower: check ... camera: check! Alright, let's go have a holey ... woohoo!]

Well, I didn’t think it was possible, but day two of the Iowa Irish turned out to be even better than day one. Not only was the food great, the folks and friends warm but the highlight for me, as a photographer, was being afforded the honor to cover two of the legendary bands in music, much less the Celtic genre. I’m speaking, of course, about The Dublin City Ramblers and The Tannahill Weavers … giants in the industry, sure. I’m still all tickled and giddy, like a little school girl!

Of course, the rest of the entertainment on day two was certainly nothing to shake a stick at: The delightful pub songs of Exorna; the rockin’ rhythms of Rising Gael; a marathon – and killer – set from The Langer’s Ball; the soothing sounds of Switchback; the more serious story-songs of Jim Sullivan; some rollicking Trad from The Larkin and Moran Brothers and, to top it all off, a positively smoking “Celtic-Rock Show” from The Sandcarvers!

A positively glorious end to a glorious weekend, sure.

I’d like to send huge thanks and “Celtic Camera” hugs out to all who made this wondrously grand weekend possible: Buck, Brilly and the entire staff over at Jameson’s Public House; The Langer’s Ball; The Larkin and Moran Brothers; Exorna; The Sandcarvers; The Elders; Wylde Nept; The Dublin City Ramblers; Rising Gael; The Tannahill Weavers; Switchback; Jim Sullivan and all of the staff, volunteers, sound & lighting folks and vendors of the Iowa Irish Fest … you’ve warmed my heart and did a fabulous job for all who attended. Kudos to you all!

Greetings~

Get up early on your day off. Drive six hours to Waterloo, Iowa. Check in to hotel. Pack camera gear. Head on over to festival grounds … time to get to work.

Work? Hardly! Not when you get to cover one of the best Irish Fests around; The Iowa Irish Fest. I ask you; how can you not have a blast covering the likes of The Langer’s Ball, The Larkin and Moran Brothers, Exorna, The Sandcarvers, The Elders and Wylde Nept? Some of the best entertainment around, for sure …

Yes indeed, day one of the fest was a hooley, sure. And of course, I couldn’t call it a day without stopping over at Jameson’s Public House for a pint … or five! A grand end to a grand day. As I lay my head down for a few hours sleep, my last thoughts were, “Does it get any better?” Tune in tomorrow to find out.

New Promotional Photo – The Sandcarvers

Greetings~

Hey … Whadda ya know? The Sandcarvers have a new poster … WooHoo!

Okay, “Truth be Told” [ahem] it’s not a new new photo. I took the original image (below, which currently adorns their homepage) and plopped in a new background.

Yes, Sunday was major photographic surgery day here at The Celtic Camera Photography!

Everyone in the band really liked the original, but we all realized they needed something that would hold up a little better when printed small, in a place like a newspaper article. So, “The Night Before” I decided which background would be used and, with Photoshop scalpel in hand I dropped in the cover image of their new album, “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.”

What’s that? You hadn’t heard The Sandcarvers have a new album? Well, consider yourself up to date on breaking news, my friend. Quite the killer little disc it is, too. I even provided a handy link above where you can pick yourself up a copy.

So, anyway, the other night I was “Starring at the Backroom of the Alehouse,” when all of a sudden an old friend dropped in on his way from “Rowdy’s Pub” and he asked, “Hey … I haven’t seen them Sandcarvers in a little while! You know where I might be able to catch them live?”

Well, me being me, I just happened to have a printed copy of their upcoming shows, and handed him this:

Well, needless to say, he took one look and was “Cryin’ Loud” with joy over all the dates coming up. He thanked me profusely and said, “Hey, I have an idea … let’s head on over to the “Old Dun Cow” and I’ll buy you a night cap … I hear they’re having a firesale on Jameson’s. I’m meeting old “Reilly’s Daughter” there … maybe you’ll get lucky and one of the “Girls of the Clare” will be there for you, eh mate?”

Hey, ya just never know … right?

Irish American Heritage Center IrishFest: Chicago IL July 11 2009

Greetings~

You know what makes for a great hooley? The Dooley Brothers, The Larkin and Moran Brothers, Searson, Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul, Finbarr Fagan’s Band, Kennedy’s Kitchen, Fitz and the Celts, The Sandcarvers, Mike Houlihan and The Irish American Heritage Center‘s Irish Fest in Chicago, that’s what!

Me and John Bowles of PaddyRock Radio had a blast this past weekend covering the event … catching up with old friends and making many new ones, too.

Now, that’s a fine craic my friends, sure!

Irish American Heritage Center IrishFest 2009: Chicago IL July 11 2009

A big, huge “Celtic Camera” thank out to Ashling, Kathy and the rest of the fine folks at the The Irish American Heritage Center. It goes without saying that I’m eternally grateful to all the fine musicians for allowing me to capture their day, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a extra special thanks and a big hug to Ms. Eileen Ivers … not only are you the Queen of the fiddle, but your warmth and generosity made my day and warmed my soul … Slainte, Eileen!

Cheers,
Gareth — The Celtic Camera Photography

The Sandcarvers In Concert: Ballydoyle Irish Pub Downers Grove IL May 22, 2009

Greetings~

The Sandcarvers turn in a stellar performance at the renowned Ballydoyle Irish Pub in Downers Grove IL. It’s been a couple of months since I’ve seen them live and I gotta tell ya, it was great to see the lads and lassie back up on stage again, sure!

Can I just say one thing here? Jason Dove … guitarist … rocks! Every time I see and hear this man I’m simply blown away anew. If you’re a fan of bone crunching chords and solos that take wing and soar, you really do need to catch this band … in addition, of course, to picking up their new album, “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.”

Now, if you’re not yet familiar with The Sandcarvers, here’s the deal: Celtic … Rock … Bassoon. Yes, I dare say you’ve probably never heard rock bassoon before. Raven has a new one, by the way, which she’s taken to calling Bruiser. Oh, the sweet tones that emit from this magic instrument.

The highlight of the evening had to be the debut of a new tune called, “Big Strong Man (Sylvest)”. With the introduction of a very melodious steel drum and Caribbean flavor to their repertoire, The ‘Carvers prove once again that there is no envelope they are afraid to push. Very nice, indeed!

If you’re a fan of just plain great music, rollicking performances, superb songwriting and vocal harmonies and rhythm sections that’ll knock your socks off, no matter the genre, you really should make some plans to spend an evening with The Sandcarvers … soon!

A big, huge, mondo “Thank You” to Phil and his lovely staff at Ballydoyle, and of course to A.J. Tony, Jeffrey, Chris, Jason and Raven (play well, love!) … The Sandcarvers.
