What a wonderful time it was at the Iowa Irish Fest. All of the musicians were so accommodating and the staff … superb! I just can’t say enough about what a great job the fest folks did. They treated everyone … bands, vendors, patrons and one lowly little photographer from PaddyRock Radio like Kings and Queens. Truly an example of how a fest can be run.

My thanks to Buck, Crista and each and every member of the fest staff … you’re all the best; the Jameson’s Public House; To all the performers: The Sandcarvers; Gaelic Storm; Chulrua; The Cottars; Cherish the Ladies; The Young Dubliners; The Trinity Irish Dancers; Black ’47; Switchback; The Killdares. You all rock, off stage as well as on.

So, Ya Thought D’ja Might Like to Go to the Show…

Sound check is completed and the crowd starts filing in. Backstage, the anticipation builds as you await showtime. Last minute check lists are gone over … are fresh batteries in all our instruments? Every one have their set list? Has every one hit the can!?!?

The dressing room lights flash three times … a signal from the stage hands that this is it. At last, the moment has arrived. Alright … let’s do this!

You walk on stage, grab your instrument and take your place.

One … two … three … four!

The first chord sounds … the audience rises as one. You “… feel the warm thrill of confusion, that space cadet glow.” For the next hour or so, you proceed to leave everything you have on stage and in the hearts and minds of those who’ve come to see you.

A shot from in the wings, stage right, just as The Sandcarvers were taking the stage back in March of 2008 at the Northern Lights Theater when they opened for The Young Dubliners. If you missed it the first time, you can see the original gallery here.

Busy but boring weekend, this, as I have way too many folders on my computer that need to be backed up to disk. Time to clear out some disk space! So, that’s my weekend. I was able to get out and shoot a little yesterday, however. Time will tell what that might bring!

It’s Only Celtic Rock But I Like It

Here we see Bryce Lehman of The Sandcarvers at The Abbey in Chicago, IL, during what was the last in a string of ten shows in the month of March to celebrate the season of St. Patrick.

This was dubbed the “Miles Ahead – 2008 Tour” by the band and included dates at O’Marro’s Public House on March 1; Northern Lights Theater with The Young Dubliners March 4; The House of Guinness on March 7; O’Bryan’s Nine Irish Brothers March 8; Shank Hall with Hothouse Flowers on March 13; Trinity Irish Pub on March 14; The Abbey and Ballydoyle Irish Pub on March 15 and finally, Tommy Nevin’s Pub and the top slot back at The Abbey March 17, St. Patrick’s Day.

I include here the most recent newsletter from The Sandcarvers, which I think sums up the whole experience rather nicely:

From: The Sandcarvers
Subject: The Sandcarvers are tired….tired, grateful, and smelly

Mornin’ all-

The Sandcarvers would like to express our love and heartfelt thanks
to everyone of you that came out to our 6 gig marathon this weekend.
To those of you that sang, drank, toasted, danced, yelled, harassed,
and hung out with us in the dank green rooms, we appreciate you more
than you know. To those of you that yelled “Freebird”, “more
cowbell”, “Rattlin bog”, and “The bass player is sexy” (even though
she probably meant Bryce), thanks and much love goes out to you as
well.

The low down:
Nothing
Nope – we’re not playing anywhere this week
No way
(New schedule coming shortly)
Ugh……..

Here’s what the Sandcarvers said about the Sandcarvers:
“zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”

Love & a dire need of caffeine and/or sleep-

AJBryceChrisJeffRavenTonyZZZZZZZZZ

Sandcarver Fun Fact 30: Jeffrey would like to extend a special thank
you to the employees and patrons of the GAP in Chicago, and the
purveyors of fine leather goods. Hey!!!!!!

Sandcarver Fun Fact 41: Nobody pollutes a hotel room faster than
Bryce. (Sorry Jamie, but you cannot compete. In fact, no one can).

As you can tell, there were many a story that sprang from this grand little tour, some of which can not be repeated in polite company ;-) and all of which will be saved for future posts. Suffice to say that I had a blast covering this very special Celtic rock extravaganza, and I’d like to thank The Sandcarvers (A.J. Laird, Bryce Lehman, Chris Trotier, Jeff Miller, Raven & Tony Keller) for the opportunity to hang with them, for the access they afforded to be able to capture these special moments and most of all for their trust, friendship and, in one case (my wife, Raven…”The sexiest Sandcarver”), love.

Thanks also to The Young Dubliners, Hothouse Flowers and to all the owners, managers and fine staff at the venues above for their gracious hospitality.

The Young Dubliners @ Northern Lights Theater, March 4, 2008

Last Tuesday, The Sandcarvers opened for The Young Dubliners at Northern Lights Theater in Milwaukee WI. This was yet one more stop on The Sandcarvers “Miles Ahead” St. Pat’s 2008 concert schedule. As I do every year at this time, I like to refer to this time of year as “March Madness!”

It’s a gruelling few weeks but hey, somebody’s gotta do it.

Anyway, I’ve finished processing the photos from The Dubs portion of the show and you can view the gallery of said by clicking on the photo above.

A quick story about The Dubs:

Back in 2002, we went to see The Dubs at the Goose Island OysterFest in Chicago. It was our first time seeing them live and we were all very impressed, especially Raven’s son, Nolan. He was particularly taken with a song called “Scream,” from their album “Absolutely,” a copy of which we purchased at the show, not only because we were becoming fans of The Dubs, but mostly so Nolan could hear “Scream” again, so taken was he by this song.

We knew that the song made a mighty big impression on him, but, little did we realize how big. As it turns out, a little over a week later, Nolan presented us with an essay he wrote about “Scream” and all that it meant to him. This was from a nine year old kid, so we were rather taken aback.

On a whim, I wrote to the lead singer and principle songwriter for The Dubs, Keith Roberts, telling him what a profound effect the song had on my stepson, thanking him for writing it and informing him of the essay.

Keith actually wrote back, amazed and gratified that he’d made such a profound impact on such a little lad. So much so, that he asked if we’d forward him a copy of what Nolan wrote., to which we agreed.

A little while later, Keith wrote back again…he was stunned! Not only that such a wee lad could, or would, write such a well composed essay, but that his words and art had such a profound effect on him. He told us, in no uncertain terms, that we had to bring Nolan with us to a show next time they were in our area and that we must bring him up after the show so he could meet him.

So, it was about a year later when The Dubs played the Irish-American Heritage Center in Chicago. We went to check it out, Nolan and his brother in tow. It was another fabulous show by The Dubs, of course, and afterward we drifted up to the front of the stage, thinking, “He’s not even gonna remember the essay.”

Not only did Keith remember all of our names and the essay, but he spent 30 minutes with Nolan, just chatting.

Quite a guy, as are the rest of the band, as well. A finer groups of blokes you’re not likely to meet.

To make a long story short, correspondence between us and Keith continued and one thing lead to another; they met The Sandcarvers, who’ve now opened for them numerous times over the years; we’ve all become grand friends and had many a wonderful time together, both on stage and off.

All this being nothing more then a roundabout way of saying that if you’re in the mood for an arse-kickin‘ evening of Celtic-rock, do try to catch a Young Dubs show sometime soon and stop and say hi to them afterward. If you don’t have a good time, well, it’s your own damn fault! ;-)

Their show last week was really a gas and such a joy to shoot, with all the pretty lights and all. An extra bonus, for me, was getting a chance to meet Eric Rigler, piper extraordinaire, who has joined the Dubs for this tour.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to thank, once again, The Dubs: Keith, Chaz, Eric, Brendan, Dave and Bob…you are all jolly and gracious souls, indeed!

Enjoy the photos!

Next stop for The Sandcarvers? Tomorrow night at Shank Hall in Milwaukee with Hothouse Flowers!
