[No coffee yet!]
Ahhh … much better! Now that’s out of the way.
So, you might have noticed that I’ve really been carrying on lately about B&W photography lately. I’m thinking this has a lot to do with the class that I’ll be taking at Northwestern University starting on Sept. 23rd:
ART 150-CN
Basic Photography
Introduction to photographic equipment, materials, and processes. Extensive darkroom instruction emphasizing high-quality black-and-white printing and creative darkroom control. Classroom discussion and lectures exploring the aesthetics of camera vision. No previous studio experience necessary. Bring camera (35-mm operable with automatic settings off) and one roll of Tri-X black-and-white 36-exposure film to first class.
I’m really excited about this, despite the fact I’ve been shooting for over five years now. I know there’s going to be many things to learn, despite all this “experience,” as it were, over and above the darkroom stuff. Just hope I don’t get sick from the chemicals!
So, I went and got me a used 35mm film SLR (Canon 650) and a couple of rolls of the required film. I’ve been shooting that first roll over the past couple of weeks. I’m going to finish up the first roll today and get it processed, just to make sure the camera works … something I’ve been meaning to do for days now, but just haven’t found the time. I’d hate to go into class with a camera that doesn’t work!
With all this being said, I’ve set my mind to making September, “Shoot With Black and White in Mind” month. Yup, I just set the DSLR on B&W mode, and it won’t be changed until Sept. 30th. Between the two cameras, I’m bound to get a few good shots, don’t you think?
So that’s my project for this month. I haven’t decided if I’ll present these individually as “Photos of the Day” or in a separate gallery yet, but there’s time for that.
Here we go … mono or bust!
