Sunday Morning Frost

Greetings—

Slept in a little later than usual this morning, but was lucky that the morning sun had not yet melted the frost that had formed on the trees over night.

Greetings—

We’re currently cleaning up after our first major snowfall of the winter; approximately 12″ of the white stuff this past week. This brings us up to about 14″ total so far for the ’09/’10 season. A far cry from our average totals by this time. At the other extreme, today’s image is from one year ago to the day, when we already had around 50″ of snow and would end the season with a record for Kenosha, 102″.

So far, we’ve been lucky!

Information of Despair (& Water)

Greetings—

The “Wisconsin” was built of iron in 1881 by the Detroit Dry Dock Co. of Wyandotte, Michigan for the Goodrich Lines. Originally ran the Milwaukee-Grand Haven route, and in 1883 went to the Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee RR. Crosby Trans. Co. got her in 1896 and renamed her “Naomi”. She ran for many years with the “Nyack”, between Milwaukee, Grand Haven and Muskegon as night boats, as the Grand Trunk Line. The “Naomi” burned May 21, 1907 about 28 miles off Grand Haven, Michigan with a loss of five lives. She was towed to Manitowoc, Wisconsin for rebuilding and put back into service in 1909 as the “E. G. Crosby”. Sold by Crosby Trans. Co. to the U.S. Quartermaster Dept. in 1918, she was renamed “General Robert M. O’Reilly” and served as a hospital ship in New York harbor. In 1920, after the war, she was purchased by Wisconsin Transit Co., renamed “Pilgrim”, and returned to the Great Lakes. In 1925 she was sold again to the Goodrich Co. and took her original name “Wisconsin” once again. The “Wisconsin” foundered off the shore of Kenosha, Wisconsin in the big blow on Lake Michigan on Oct. 29, 1929. All but nine of the sixty people on board were saved. Capt. Douglas H. Morrison was among the lost.

Today, the Wisconsin lies six and half miles east-southeast of Kenosha in 130 feet of water. The superstructure is gone with I-beams and supports remaining. Inside the wreck much machinery, and cargo can still be seen along with three automobiles, a Hudson, Essex, and a Chevrolet touring car.

When night drifts along

… And happy New Year, one and all!

I thought I’d start 2010 with a feature that has proven to be quite popular here at, “The Way I See It” blog; “Compare and Contrast.” One RAW file of one image, but processed once for color and again for black & white. Most of ya know I’m a B&W guy, so you can probably figure out which is my favorite … but how about you? Vote for your favorite in the Comments section.
